Clarity Accounting Blog: Setting up a Website: Important Things to Consider

I agree with your recommendations. Unfortunately most business owners do not perform their due diligence when selecting a website design team. There primary concern is getting the site up. Part of the problem is a lack of understanding about the various aspects of online marketing which include not just the website itself, but traffic generation, seo, e-commerce (where applicable) and follow-up with clients, either via auto-response or some type of email marketing.

There is also the issue of graphic design firm knowing very little about internet marketing. A pretty design is not more important than getting found. Of course, it would be nice to have both.

Today, it is sad for a web designer to not have decent knowledge of SEO and to not consider these things when creating the website.

You might like to consider web analytics too. Without proper tracking and benchmarking, site owners have no idea how their sites are performing.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten to include web analytics. Funny how I have omitted something so important as I am addicted to my own analytics, you can find out so much from analytics. I have even detected errors with our software and adjusted our marketing strategy based on user behaviour.

Yup, analytics can be VERY addictive, it's usually the first thing I look at when I step into the office :)
